Complaining is born from duality. Remaining separated from the Lord i attach my consciousness with material or transitory things. Things which aren't permanent. Family, friends, other people, cars, houses, money, reputation, as well as more direct things like the body Akaal Purakh ji has provided as a vessel for the soul. These are only temporary. i complain because i look around at what others have and do ardaas please WaheGuruu give me this temporary thing instead of asking for Naam and the ability to continue to jap Naam. Entire economies are run on the premise that people have unlimited wants - why? because many people like me are far from the Lord. once He grants His Grace then i'll appreciate everything He has bestowed, appreciate how lucky i am after 8.4 million births and deaths to have this opportunity..

Guru Arjan Dev Ji literally states wherever the Lord’s servants are, the Husband Lord is always with them. Everything and everyone is His creation. Metaphorically, the home is often used in Gurbani to mean the home of the inner self where the soul resides. For e.g on Ang 30:
Gr hI ivic mhlu pwieAw gur sbdI vIcwir ]2]
ghar hee vich mehal paaeiaa gur sabadhee veechaar 2
Within the home of their own inner being, they obtain the Mansion of the Lord's Presence, reflecting on the Guru's Shabad. 2

So His true servants place full trust and faith in Akaal Purakh in the home of the inner being, inside their minds, souls, and externally in their bodies they physically act according to His Will. Without His pity or Mercy, without kirpaa we can achieve nothing. So the Gursikhs beg for His Mercy to sing praises lovingly to their Beloved. Akaal Purakh provides strength, faith and support to His Gursikhs to follow their rehit, to live in His Hukam and accept His Will..

The Rahaao line to reflect on is the Gursikh accepts what the Lord does; He is the Causer of everything that happens.. Everything happens for a reason – we might not know what that is because we are not capable of fathoming or understanding the Lord. But the Gursikh keeps faith, gains strength and takes welfare in being in total acceptance of the Lord’s Will knowing that on His path anything is possible.. Guru Arjan Dev Ji wrote this Shabad and Himself King of Kings had full belief, respect and love for the Divine Message of Gurbani. He Himself wrote about accepting the Lord’s Will proved it by giving Shaheedi foremost when the time came in total acceptance.

When such testing times arise, people may worry about their respect or reputation, honour or wealth or be offered all these to encourage them to waiver from their faith. But Gursikhs remember Gurbani teaches the Lord is the Provider of all things. Guru Nanak Dev Ji always wanted to be referred as a mere servant or slave of the Lord in the prose of Gurbani so the Fifth Guru Nanak says the entire life of a Gursikh should be lived at God’s feet. It is His feet from which everything is obtained, it is God’s feet from which one will be protected from pain or suffering, and accepting His Will that is where we should seek shelter.

kahu naanak gur pooraa bhaettiou mittiou sagal a(n)dhaesaa 21442
Says Nanak, I have met with the Perfect Guru, and all my fears have been dispelled. 21442

When the Lord extends His Mercy our sufferings, our problems, our pains, our stresses, our burdens, our unhappiness, our despair, our misery, our troubles, our diseases, our agony, our sadness, our hurt, our injuries, our grief, our sorrow, our anguish, our wounds are ALL ended. The aath pahar are the eight four hour intervals of the days, which essentially means 24 hours a day. 24 hours a day the Gursikh contemplates the Lord which is fruitful; everyone reaps what they sow and the Gursikhs that sow the seeds of worshipping the Lord reap the sweet fruit of happiness and anand. When Gursikh repeats the Name of the Lord, from which everything is obtained, they are satisfied, satiated, happy, rich and at peace.

For the rehaao line to reflect on, is a supplication, an ardaas, to the Lord, the Loved One of all to save his servant. This Shabad is about supplicating to the Lord and praying most sincerely and humbly from the heart for Him to save us from the sufferings of being born and reborn. The best way to do this is to think about all the pain you may have suffered over the past year – the stresses, the hurt, everything.. Then think about the pain over the past five years, then contemplate all the pain you have experienced in all your life.. Take all that pain and use it to do the most sincere, most heartfelt ardaas possible. There will be a lot our minds will have forgotten or blocked out.. Can someone even begin to imagine the pain of going through all this again and again.. The pain of birth and death again..

When the Gursikh does ardaas in this way with full faith in the Lord he receives anything he asks for.. Such sincere Gursikhs meet and become one with the Perfect Guru and are fearless as they know the Lord is inside them and they see Him all around.

O Nanak, one crosses over the terrifying world-ocean, singing the Songs of God. 2363847

Everywhere in the word there is love.. a brother or sister’s love, parent’s love, friend’s love, children’s love, grandparent’s love and a partner’s love.. In each case this love is subject to two people that have the five vices of lust, anger, greed, emotional attachment and false egotistical pride. People like me use the word love but underneath all they have are these vices. As a result they put their own personal happiness first and avoid pain at the expense of others. This is the rahaao line and we need to contemplate on this.

Its easy to claim someone as an “mine", as someone that somehow belongs to us and in loving that person through Moh, we attach ourselves emotionally to them. But the real worth of any love is seen when it is put to the test..

Very few and far between are those capable of passing these tests and even those who are the most loving, who always put you first before themselves, who would even give their lives to save yours cannot save you when the last moment comes when Death takes you because none can accompany you..

How strange is that?! Why do we put so much energy into the love of those who in the end are in the same position as us but cannot save us, cannot get us across this world-ocean of sadness..

The mind of a stupid person like me does not learn and sadly that mortal’s efforts to change himself will go in vain unless he prays to the Lord and sincerely sings His praises to cross over the world-ocean, and achieve the meaning of life; self-realization and emancipation. This is what True Love is. The True Love between the Beloved and the soul-bride never dies, True Love never fades, True Love is forever..

Raga Wadhans is considered suitable for the cold season and is assigned to the afternoon hours. Its mood is quiet and tender. Texts set to the raga explain how the Guru alone can lead one to the Lord. Without the Lord one is likened to a woman without the love of her spouse. Fifty-three sabdas plus numerous slokas represent the total number composed to this raga by Guru Nanak, Guru Amar Das, Guru Ram Das and Guru Arjan. More on Raga Wadhans

Mahala tells us who wrote the shabad: in Gurbani Mahala is used to refer to the Guru Sahibans so here Mahala 1 refers to Guru Nanak Dev Ji.

Ghar is a musical sign, used at the top of the Shabad in the SGGS. It gives a hint to Raagees as to what musical clef (beat) to sing the Shabad in. In other words, "Ghar" binds music and poetry in their metrical-form. There are up to seventeen "Ghar" mentioned in the SGGS. Musicologists have different interpretations of this term. But the consensus seems to be that it denotes the parts of a Taal (beat). Ghar 1 refers to the Daadraa Taal used in Indian Music. There is 1 Taalee* and the Beat has 6 Maatraas.

* Taalee is the pattern of clapping. Taals are typified by a particular pattern and number of claps.
** Maatraa is the beat, which may be subdivided if required.

I am a sacrifice, cut apart into pieces, a sacrifice to Your Name, O Lord Master. This is the essence of the entire Shabad - the Lord's Name means everything to the Gursikh and they are happy to sacrifice anything and everything for the Name. Here, committing the ultimate physical act of sacrifice is described; being cut into pieces. This doesn't mean we necessarily have to go and give Shaheedi for the Lord's Name.. it means being satisfied sacrificing our physical, mental or material efforts in the service and upliftment of the Lord's creation. it means sacrificing our time to repat the Lord's Name. it means sometimes sacrificing the easy option for the harder or more honest path. Compared to the less fortunate, we live a lavish life of such abundance. Think of anything and everything we have... we have to not only be willing to give that back to the Lord who provided it; but also use it and share it according to His Will while we have it...

You are not nadhar or visible to me, although You dwell with everyone. Applying this to me i haven't had such good fortune to repeat the Lord's Name enough to be able to see the Lord within all !

How can the thirst of the thirsty be quenched, with that wall between me and the pool? The fortunate souls who repeat the Name are thirsty to see the Lord but the pond/pool/tank (metaphor for the Lord) has a wall/screen in front. This screen is the illusion of Maya, its the illusion that He Himself created so that only those with a spiritual kamaaee or achievement could see through it and see the Lord inside each and everyone and all around us.

Many talk of the pain and suffering of separation; O pain, you are the ruler of all

The following is from Salok Fareed Jee on Ang 1379 of Dhan Dhan Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji Maharaj:

ibrhw ibrhw AwKIAY ibrhw qU sulqwnu ]
birehaa birehaa aakheeai birehaa thoo sulathaan
Many talk of the pain and suffering of separation; O pain, you are the ruler of all.

PrIdw ijqu qin ibrhu n aUpjY so qnu jwxu mswnu ]36]
fareedhaa jith than birahu n oopajai so than jaan masaan 36
Fareed, that body, within which love of the Lord does not well up - look upon that body as a cremation ground. 36

Birhaa is the mind's pain of separation from someone and those pangs to be around them. Birhaa is repeated twice to show the heartfelt agony of separation. Aakheeai as the abandoned female separated from her Husband can do nothing but go from pillar to post talking about her pain to anyone and everyone who listens. This happens to people all over the world so many people talk of the pain of being separated from their Beloved. The pain is then called Sultaan or the ruler of all. Many think of worldly kings as rulers, others think of the Lord as the supreme ruler but its pain of being separated from the Beloved that rules over every heart, every soul, every mind everywhere... its the hurt of living as female souls without the having the happiness and inner peace of the Husband Lord with us which is the suffering of sufferings. This Chief of pains drives the entire Creation because if we were to achieve our life aim of merging our souls with the Lord we would be free of the cycle of birth and death, free from any hurt by the vices, but more importantly free from the agony of being without the love of the Lord as one who has the Lord needs nothing else..

Any tan or body where the love of the Lord does not oopjai or blossom is considered a cremation ground. Similarly on Ang 89 Guru Angad Dev Ji states "naanak jis pi(n)jar mehi birehaa nehee so pi(n)jar lai jaar O Nanak, that human body, in which there is no pain of separation from the Lord-take that body and burn it." This is the place where the five vices burn away; turning all the love and energy of the soul into ash. The cremation ground of the body with a burning and writhing soul is considered the place where demons reside, a place where death surrounds you; a place of neverending sadness and despair - such is the body without the Lord...
